Observations

1. Umbrellas are for tourists - Icelanders ignore the rain.  If it rains heavily, they put up the hoods of their weatherproof, made-for-Icelandic-weather jackets and maybe walk a little faster.

2. There is no sales pressure whatsoever, anywhere.

3. Art is everywhere!  In the original prints on the curtains, in the ashtray design at a cafe, exhibits of local talents in many places we go. Icelandic art is not pretentious - they do no elevate paintings above textiles, or abstract over representational - and Icelanders are not snotty about art - it's art of everyday life.

4. Despite a diet heavy in meat and dairy and not so many veggies, Icelanders are not fat.  I think it's because they walk everywhere.  Great walking paths in and around the city, and you can walk any where, as long as you close farm gates after you.
